The good news is that from 2025, the 25-year import rule means that cars made in 2000 are now eligible for individual import. Plus, the new 25% tariff on imported cars doesn’t apply to cars that are more than 25 years old.

So, if you’ve got your eye on a sporty European model such as the wonderful little 2000 Renault Clio 172 hot-hatch, the wild lightweight 2000 Lotus Exige S1, or the Vauxhall VX220 / Opel Speedster roadster, things just got a lot easier. Buying the once-unobtainable vintage cars is all the fuss online nowadays, but no one talks about the things involved in importing a classic car. It’s not quite as easy as buying the car and then it arriving at your door, however many weeks later. In this post, we explain a few things you’ll need to consider.
Shipping logistics
One of the biggest things to sort out as an individual importer is the shipping logistics. Getting your car safely to your destination, in one piece and with peace of mind, is essential for any car enthusiast. The cost for this service will depend on the company you choose, but also the size and weight of your vehicle, the distance and the method of shipping. Plus, you’ll need to consider if you will meet the car at the port, or if you then need it forwarded to you, in which case the same logistics apply again. The condition of the car will also impact this, as it needs to be in full working order to use a roll-on, roll-off service.

Make sure to use a company that has experience with car import to ensure the smoothest experience. They should also be able to advise you on the necessary paperwork they’ll need in order for their agents to complete the process. However, there will be an element of management from you, so you need to make sure that you’ve got the time to manage this, so everything goes correctly.
Making sure it meets U.S regulations
As well as actually being able to import the car as an individual buyer, the other benefit of importing a 25-year-old car is that it qualifies for exemption from the stringent safety and emissions regulations, making the process much easier for you. You will, however, need to make sure you’ve got the correct paperwork that shows the date of manufacture, and have also completed a HS-7 form for U.S. customs. Plus, you’ll need to consider how you’re going to use the car, to ensure that it’s safe for your individual needs, regardless of regulation exemption.
Regardless of the age of the car, one thing you will need to be sure of is the cleanliness of the vehicle. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has strict rules to avoid any pests being accidentally imported into the country along with your car. While the responsibility for actioning this will be on the seller, you need to make sure the car has been properly cleaned, including the underneath, spare tyres, in the engine bay and internally, otherwise you may have to pay for an expensive USDA clean when it arrives.

Finally, you need to consider how you’re going to pay for your vehicle. Before you buy, make sure to do your research about the seller, the cost of the car in comparison to the market, and if there are any extra fees that you need to be aware of. You also need to agree which currency you’re going to pay in.
Whatever price you settle on, make sure you’re happy with the payment plan and platform. Given that this is likely to be a significant amount of money, you need to make sure you’re using a secure transfer system, lest you be an accidental victim of fraud.
